  • As I understand it, that’s some Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson shit.

Back in the 70s liberal/liberalism meant pretty much the same thing in the U.S. as elsewhere. Nixon even called his reelection something along the lines of “a victory for western liberal democracy.” Part of liberalism is a focus on rights of the individual, including civil rights. Civil rights and many other liberation movements of the era used the language of that aspect of liberalism.

Enter a bunch of religious assholes of the time. They loved all the pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps, right to private property, greed, etc. of individual rights but had a big problem with women wearing pants and expecting to be able to go to work without being sexually assaulted, gay people existing openly and breathing, and probably the civil rights movement too but it was going out of style to be open about that. They started using liberal/liberalism in a denigrating way to describe feminists, LGBT people, and any other group that got their puritanical knickers in a twist.

After a couple decades the terms were completely divorced from their original political theory definitions which would, I think, have Republicans considered more liberal than Democrats. But I suppose that could depend on which aspects of liberalism you give more weight to.

  • Before Russia did their heel turn in the aughts, they almost joined NATO after a period of significant cooperation. Russia seeing the U.S., or it’s allies, as enemies is a symptom of Putin turning a fledgling democracy into a dictatorship, not the natural state of affairs.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia–NATO_relations

Go to the “Development of post-Cold War cooperation (1990–2004)” section and check out “NATO-Russia Founding Act”, “NATO-Russia Permanent Joint Council”, and “NATO-Russia Council”.

Back then the talk was pearl clutching over NATO with Russia being seen as some racist white alliance against China, MENA, India, and others in the global south.

Russia only sees us as enemies because Putin needed to create enemies to seize and consolidate power.

Even ignoring the primary arguments of bodily autonomy and health, both physical and mental, you can’t be pro-life without being superstitious and anti-science. Being pro-science allows you to base your opinion on things like viability and brain activity instead of things like conception and heartbeat which are meaningless outside of religious nonsense.

But aside from that, he listed them separately so I don’t know why you’re linking this meme to the opinion that one follows naturally from, or is inseparable from, the other.

  • All covered in the link. The addition of January and February and later moving the new year from March to January is the reason Sept-Dec are no longer the seventh-tenth months. Not July and August, which were renamings, not additions.

Edit: I suppose my first comment should have specified early Romans. The way I wrote it could be read as all those changes happening after the Romans.

  • That’s a common misconception. For the Romans, the year used to start with March and only have ten months. January and February weren’t even named, it was just the time between harvest and the new year. Several calendar changes followed over the centuries. Adding two months (January and February). Moving the new year to January, which made September-December no longer 7-10. Adding random one-off months to realign with the seasons. And a couple different tries at leap days, among other things.

    This gives a quick overview.

Edit 2: To clarify, the above changes were all made by the Romans, they only started with a ten month calendar.

Edit: The fifth and sixth months were originally named Quintilis and Sextilis before they were changed to July and August.
