We do the same, but opposite. We have a minivan and a smaller EV. The minivan is technically hers and the EV is mine, but it’s really more what it’s used for. If one of us is taking the kids somewhere (school, birthday parties, fun) we take the van. If we’re running to the store, normal errands or just taking a single kid we’ll use the EV.

It doesn’t make sense for her to take the minivan to run to the store to pick up something small and it doesn’t make sense for me to take the smaller car to bring the kids somewhere.

Yea, that’s more or less the same cost a fully loaded i5 would be in the US. Works out to be about 15k more than the normal 5 series, more or less.

Currently only Ford and Rivian can use Tesla chargers in the US. BMW, Mercedes and a bunch of others have announced partnerships with Tesla late 2023 / early 2024 but they haven’t released the adapters or technically allowed to use it just yet.

I’m absolutely in love with the i7 (the 7 series in general), but the i5 is the closest I’ll get and even then it’s really hard to justify since I really don’t drive a whole lot.

It’s something I’ve been considering getting but the one thing that really gets me about it is it’s essentially an ICE car with its engine swapped out for a battery and electric motor. It’s so big and heavy.

I haven’t gotten to test drive one yet, so maybe it doesn’t feel as bad when driving. I know not really the same class (though surprisingly close in cost) but I’ve been leaning towards the mach e GT (one thing Tesla got right is their supercharger network and Ford can take advantage of that).

I’m also half hoping they come out with a sedan built from the ground up as an EV. I considered the i4, but at that price there’s a lot of great cars that would probably be better.

Did your company buy them or lease? I don’t think I can bring myself to actually buy an EV. I’m still not sure how the battery will be in 10+ years.

I’m definitely not an apple fanboy (I’m an android user) but Apple switched to DRM free a while ago.

He was relevant there for a hot minute when he spoke out against Trump, but now he’s doing whatever he can to get back in MAGA’s good graces.

A lot of what you hear is overblown. I’m usually the one to take my kids to activities (karate, gymnastics, birthday parties, etc). I’m very much an extrovert so I’m usually the type to talk to the other parents, play with the kids, etc.

It’s all about the situation and your demeanor. I’m usually the first to stop a kid from walking out of a place, running into the street, etc. I’ve never had a response other than thank you. Most parents appreciate the help.

Sometimes you might find parents that are a bit colder, but that’s the exception, not the norm. As long as it doesn’t seem like you’re trying to lore the kids into your van with candy, you’re probably fine.

Me and a few friends have a biweekly group who play. We treat it like an actual tabletop RPG and have been having a ton of fun.

I originally completely over engineered it by tracking the YTD humidity and adjusting for the difference between the current average and last year’s and then someone mentioned just putting a second humidity sensor outside the bathroom. So I just do that. If the bathroom humidity spikes about 10% over the humidity outside the bathroom, it turns on and then it turns off at a static number.

It sounds wasteful, but I already had a sensor in my primary bedroom, and the thermostat is right outside the kids bathroom so I didn’t have to install anything new.

I then added a cooldown to make sure it doesn’t end up in a loop where it keeps turning on and off (that’s never actually happened but it seemed like a good idea).

I also use it as a way to control the lights. I use motion detection to turn on the lights, but they used to turn off while someone was in the shower. Now it checks to see if the fan is on and if it is, resets the motion detection timer.

Bathroom fan connected to a humidity sensor is my (and my family’s )absolute favorite automation. I spent so much time on my system setting up sensors, configuring things, etc, but nothing gives me more delight than when I’m taking a shower, the fan kicks on automatically and then shuts off automatically.

I haven’t had to deal with foggy mirrors in years!

GoDaddy has always been pretty shitty.

I moved about half my domains (I have about roughly 30) to Cloudflare and then stopped as I started hitting caveats. For instance they considered some of my domains “premium” and wouldn’t take them. I was having problems using them with some hosted website providers, etc

I let the rest of my domains transfer to SquareSpace and it’s been mostly painless (besides Google Domains completely fucking up my email but that’s wasn’t SquareSpaces fault). I’ll probably run out the registration on all of them and make a decision on where I’m moving my domains next year. Probably won’t be Cloudflare though.

That said, Cloudflare definitely seems cheaper than SquareSpace.

My uncle came back from Vietnam with really bad PTSD (among other problems like alcoholism). Every fourth he would spend the whole day/night in the basement with the curtains drawn (to block out the flashes) and headphones on with the sound turned all the way up (to block out the sounds).

He would also take my cousins to buy fireworks every year.

I don’t mean to minimize your struggle, I just thought the juxtaposition was interesting.

I hope you could work through your struggles. I’m happy to say he was able to. He was able to quit drinking and minimize the effects of his PTSD. By the end of his life he was out there watching us shoot off the fireworks.

This isn’t a case of a streamer talking to a viewer through chat. This is a case of an adult private messaging with a minor in a self admittedly “inappropriate” manner. Doc might have said after the fact that he didn’t “intend” on following through with his messages, but when an adult, even jokingly, is making plans to meet up with a fan at a convention who is a minor, that’s a BIG red flag.

Twitch had no choice but to ban him. What if they did nothing and he did end up meeting up with them? What if it turned into SA allegations and it was found out that Twitch was aware of this? I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want my kids talking to an adult over private messages full stop. Let alone if the content was “inappropriate”.

If you’re a 40 y/o texting “inappropriate” things to a minor, you should have your twitch contract cancelled too.

Interesting statistics on this (mind you, this is all from quick Google searches because I was curious). Data centers use about 90 billion kWh of power a year globally (which seems to include servers, cooling, and all the misc energy usage) while AC use is about 250 billion kWh per year globally.

Of that 90 billion kWh a year, I have no clue how much of it is used on AI (and how much AI is going to increase that number in the future) but it seems like, today at least, AC usage puts a lot more stress on the power grid than data centers do.

You also have to account for how that power is used. Data centers will use a pretty consistent amount all year long where AC usage spikes when needed hitting the grid with huge loads all at once.
