  • I own an LGS and during covid I had a lot of “paying it forward” and it created a LOT of extra work for me for very little pay out.

I had a friend from high school who now lives 2200 miles away. He purchased a game through my online shop and instead of shipping it to him he had me give it to someone local. That person bought a game, and did the same thing. This went on for two weeks or so. Everyone wanted me to do some kind of contest for their game. I was putting in 2-3 hours of work for $20 or so. After two weeks or however long it was, I gave up. I told the last person who bought it I gave it to a random person.

This was all during the lock down so I could not even be open at the time. I had to hand deliver the prize around town, or set up a place for them to pick it up. I loved the idea of it all, but it was not worth it on my end at all.

  • In 96 I worked at a Halloween shop that I do not think is around any longer. It may have been called Halloween Spirit. They had a year round shop called Spirit or something. They sold pool tables and ping pong tables. Anyway when the Halloween shop was closing for the year they were going to open a Christmas version. That was the only year I remember seeing it. I also do not remember the Halloween shop coming back the next year. (This was in Berks County PA in case it was regional, and now that I am thinking about it, their main location may have been King of Prussia)

  • Initially I heard about mastodon as a Reddit alternative, it was not. I have never been a Twitter user. I did create a Twitter account at some point, I only ever used it to post images from when I was at occupy Wall Street, and then later to follow a couple accounts for updates (Sean Murray of Hello Games). When I opened my own business I created a Twitter account for that specifically and used it to send out coupon codes and stuff like that.

Once musk bought Twitter I deleted both of my accounts. I had totally forgotten about mastodon, so I got on the list for a Bluesky code. Around the time I got my Bluesky code I heard about Lemmy, and then heard about mastodon again. Had my Bluesky code not arrived when it did, I would have created a mastodon account for my business instead of Bluesky. Since I never use either it is a moot point for me.
