Powerful oxidizers are dangerous stuff!

One I’ve learned about recently (and used) is potassium permanganate. One of its uses is for improving water quality in fish ponds. It oxidizes basically all organic matter. It can simultaneously knock out algae, bacteria, parasites, hormones, and other excess organic waste. And the pathogens it kills can’t build up resistance to it like they would an antibiotic or poison, so it can be used preventively without creating stronger bugs. You can’t really build resistance to BURNING outside video games.

But that also means that if you add too much, you can just as easily sterilize all life in a body of water, including fish and anything else you want to keep.

AND it means you need to be careful when handling it. If you burn your eyes or your lungs, it makes them stop working!

Layers of protection. It’s worth it when we’re talking about life and death safety.

I’m not sure if I saw it in the same place, but I saw the same recommendation long ago and have stuck with it ever since.

I don’t rely on it for changing lanes though. It absolutely helps situational awareness, but I always turn and look.

That’s true, but I would amend it to say that the EC and our stupid FPTP system, plus the bias of the senate, are what’s keeping the entire Republican Party relevant.

The rabid and mean stupidity is what is keeping Donald Trump in particular in the race. The establishment might actually like to get rid of him and get back to “money good, human well being bad” like God intended, but they could not get away with it yet.

This is one thing I love about having old but reliable cars. Our bigger family car that my wife drives is banged up in so many ways but I can just ignore it. As long as the mirrors work I don’t have to worry about how many scratches are on the housing, and as long as the tires hold air it’s easier to ignore the wheels that look like somebody was practicing their angle grinder technique.

And then with my little commuter car, even though I like to park far away and I don’t drive into shit, I still don’t have to worry about other people or keeping it looking clean, etc.

In general I find it liberating and good for the ol’ mental health to not obsess over superficial qualities of material possessions. So if I can make it easier to do that, it’s a win.

Judging by some of my distant acquaintances it’s something along the lines of HURR DURR GASOLINE WAS CHEAPER 8 YEARS AGO. They focus on a global commodity of all things.

Seriously, the only stuff I’ve seen from them that even approaches a policy comparison rather than “lol black lady is a ho” caliber stuff revolves around money. And some of that might actually be a valid discussion if it were correct and if it weren’t for the absurd amount of other issues.

It’s just a low-information team sport, regardless of how insane reality is.

I think they mean that 2/3 is close to but still not quite as big as 1/4 since 4 is bigger than 2 or 3.

We should all be decent, empathetic, and compassionate enough people that the demographic breakdown doesn’t create a negative effect like that.

I’m one of the many cis dudes here, and I just cannot get offended when it gets pointed out that other dudes can be assholes. Or that other Americans can be assholes. Or other humans, for that matter.

Yep, that sounds pretty on-brand for the types I was thinking of.

They react so poorly to the mere existence of people who they see as other/weird that just your choice of diet not only annoys them but somehow personally insults them.

I mean how many things could we list that drive conservatives to “they are attacking/destroying our way of life!” just by existing or seeking equality. The paranoia and persecution complexes just follow from there.

It’s sadly all too common for the conservatives I know to downright brag about how little regard they have for animals.

I have a distinct memory of a 3rd grade project where we made posters about ourselves. My favorite TV show was Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

The reaction was something like “that’s not really a TV show but we’ll allow it.” I certainly watched it on our TV, probably with a VHS recording of it being on broadcast TV.

He’s an awesome biblically accurate Angel that horrifies those who gaze upon him.

On one hand, sure.

But on the other hand… I feel like this image would be some entry-level Facebook MAGAing, unfortunately.

They don’t care about solving problems. They care about having something to get angry and complain about. And as a bonus they can virtue signal to each other about how they really do hate the people they’re supposed to hate.

Yeah, unfortunately a huge chunk of the population is so negative that complaining about the world is pretty much how they interact with it. That and they define themselves by the things they don’t like.

Oof, I’m not in IT thank goodness, but I still feel this in my bones. I’ve had to write plenty of instructions for in-house trained users though, and it seemed just as bad. I can’t imagine what it’s like with real randos.

I’ve definitely seen some of these “please let us help you” getting sent around. And even in completely different types of organizations I’ve seen time and time again how the obnoxious entitled complainers don’t even show up.

I’m 0% an expert in this, but I think they move at light speed all the time. Light is “affected” by mass only indirectly, since the light travels in a straight line through local space but space itself is curved by the mass.

Yep. Imagine you’re off in space such that you, the sun, and the earth make an equilateral triangle. The sun disappears, then after 8 minutes you see it disappear. Then after ANOTHER 8 minutes you see the earth go dark, because that light had to cover two of the 8-light-minute long legs of the triangle.
