No, it’s great advice, and if they can’t figure out to google “native flowers in my region” after that then they really are hopeless.

Why is the onus always 100% on the people trying to help, while the newbie gets a free pass on not putting in effort? Frankly if the newbie put some effort in they probably wouldn’t have even needed to make the post in the first place.

Of all the hobbies and random niche things I’ve taught myself on the Internet over the course of 15 years, I’ve only ever had post questions twice. Whatever question one is asking has already been asked and answered. Very, VERY rarely is someone looking for information so niche that it doesn’t yet exist on the Internet.

I know those guys are trying to be helpful, but to a newb they can feel like you’re not ready to even start your hobby

If you’re trying to start a new hobby and you get put off by people giving you information because you think they’re being condescending, learn to put aside the personal feelings so you can focus on the thing you wanted to focus on.

New information is useful regardless of how it was presented to you. You can’t control how other people act, but you can control how you react to it. Learn to take the good and leave the bad.

Ask how much they get paid, then go to your boss asking for a raise because you can actually use excel, and this other person can’t. You deserve more than they do, and id your boss won’t give you the raise, you can go down to your coworkers level and stop using excel.

It never takes them long to see your value when you stop giving it to them.

Sounds like you just don’t want your authority to be challenged.

If you’re wrong and a student points that out, own it. Instead you expect them to question their own knowledge while submitting to your authority for confirmation or denial. But if the student already knows, they don’t need your confirmation. They need you to admit that you were incorrect, and move forward with the correct information. Otherwise you’re just demonstrating that you’re an authority that cannot be trusted to be fair.

Authority that cannot be challenged is authority that cannot be respected. Authority must continually earn the respect of its constituents, or it will lose its power over them.

If you can actually have a reasoned discussion about it, instead of simply getting angry at being questioned, then you are better than 90% of teachers.

In my experience most teachers don’t like being questioned, which of course is directly antithetical to their supposed vocation.
