  • You are kinda missing the point.

It’s not about how energy efficient or inefficient a single ChatGPT prompt is.

It’s that A/C is arguably more important to an individual than your ability to use AI. But while the government asking people to reduce AC usage is not new, AI is.

So we’re introducing new and unnecessary ways to draw power while asking people to tolerate higher temperatures within their homes.

My personal take is that we should be investing in nuclear power so we continue evolving as a society. But I guess we can hold back progress in the name of puttering along with other technology as the world slowly burns and people cook inside their homes

And nowhere in there did you touch on how sending a kid to the store for striped paint could somehow cause trauma, rather than teach a valuable lesson about gullibility, critical thinking, and being able to laugh at one’s self.

Not everything in this world is as serious as escaping a country to avoid punishment or death for who you are. Having the emotional intelligence to differentiate between the serious and light hearted is something a person should develop when they’re young or life will be much harder for them.

  • My god guys it was terrible, my Dad sent me to the store for a bucket of steam, and the cashier laughed at me.

How was I supposed to know steam didn’t come in pre-packaged buckets? Nobody ever explained the particulars of steam packaging!

Literally nothing worse could ever happen to me. Now I’ll be in therapy for years.

Yeah. In this case you’d need to know that paint is a liquid, and comes in a can. Is it logical that paint is going to come in stripes? How would that be applied to a brush? How would that be applied to a wall?

If you take 2 seconds to think you realize this is a nonsensical request.

If you think everything in this world needs to be explained to you, you aren’t going to get very far. Also an important lesson to learn.

Learning to use a software interface, or the intricacies of how a thing works is not necessarily dependant on critical thinking. Understanding that a light bulb is not powered by blinker fluid, or that a liquid paint could not possibly be sold and applied to a wall in stripes is dependent on critical thinking.

It’s critical thinking. In life, it’s not always about knowing but about understanding.

It’s also about having thick skin and the ability to take a joke. Nobody is hurt, it is funny when you think about it, and it will encourage you to think about things in the future.

I do not need to know turn signals don’t require blinker fluid. Because it’s a fuckin light bulb.

The people in this comments section are acting like this is somehow traumatic. How fucking sheltered are you people?

  • I think HR is just ill equipped for technical interviews, but they try to conduct them regardless.

Was denied a position because HR felt my experience “lacked depth” which I still can’t understand 3 years later.

Did the same role at a larger company. Had more responsibility than they were giving me. Developed my own tools for job automation. Grew their business from nothing to half a mil a month. Experienced all stages of growth and realized massive success.

After that interview I kept getting technical interviews and getting passed on because I was too senior for the position

  • On Lemmy, absolutely.

And, I mean look at the comments in general. Whenever this topic comes up people call it a non-issue, people say the issue doesn’t exist, people say who cares if people are coming over the border, you have people citing studies showing illegal immigrant populations are generally less violent than citizens. People want to justify the relative inaction of Biden. Now, I voted for the man, but this is absolutely disgusting.

Now he’s claiming he doesn’t have authority to act. I’m sorry, but at this point I’ve seen more than enough in the way of arguments for the White House already having the necessary powers to secure the border. There has never been a point in Biden’s presidency where he did not have the authority to take the necessary action in securing the border.

So yes, I do not believe we should have a wide open border that is a literal free-for-all like we have at this exact moment. I agree, we should be devoting proper resources to screen, process, and take care of the people that want to come into the country. We should be doing this the right way.

  • I can’t agree with that. It’s only unsustainable because we have a flood of immigrants coming over the border and a catch-and-release program.

And my wife has a PhD, of which she did a year in the US. Not in something useless like poetry, but in meteorology. She did not have the connections to get a US sponsorship from an employer. So without knowing someone, she was without options.

I know immigrants who have found their way into the US legally, and overstayed. They have gone on to become business owners, or successful in their respective fields. The issue with your assumption is that you think we’re actually effective at selecting the best and brightest.

The reality is that if we secured our borders, we wouldn’t be overwhelmed.

  • You should look at what the requirements look like for an immigrant Visa. The average person in South America does not have the ability to satisfy those requirements. But that doesn’t mean they are unable to become a valuable and contributing member of society.

I know people in the US that came here illegally and have gone on to become business owners. But only because they were able to meet and marry a US citizen.

There needs to be a legal path to entry. And we should be stopping the flood of people coming over the border at the same time.
