  • Ah yes of course. Both Meta and Bluesky have far outrun any federated-short-blogging effort of the Fediverse, and as a result companies will rather want to monetize those. But this is also the paradoxical situation of people in here who both want “the Fediverse to succeed” and “keep corporate interests out of the Fediverse”: Either won’t happen.

Right now it looks more like this’ll remain a hyper-specialized place for specific discussions, Mastodon more so. You can go there for false dichotomies in regards to browser development feedback for example, or for dejected Youtube actual-content-creators getting yelled at for engaging with their community.

But it seems it’ll stay at that. However, this also keeps any monetary interest away from it, so that’s good. Of course, should this ever change and the Fediverse grows more welcoming and that works and it grows bigger, of course the moment users move in (in numbers), advertisers, astroturfers and all will move in with them. That’s just a given.

And partially why I hate this “Just block’em!”-approach to Threads: It assumes the stick-your-fingers-into-your-ears-and-ignore-the-issue approach would ever be an actual solution to any problem. And then when you run into an issue you cannot avoid that way, you have fuck all experience doing something actionable about it, as you’ve never tried before.

  • It’s just a legal safety net that they cannot know whether at the moment the route is cycling-safe. So while you can follow their route, real-world situations might differ and hence you need to think for yourself.

Over here they show the same warning for pedestrian and car routes. Which is sad, because it tells me that enough people blindly drive into shit based off of a routing app that they need to tell people to please not turn their 2 braincells off, as much as a difference that is going to make…

  • Yeah like somebody else said, you’d have to challenge their philosophical believes that leads them to hold this opinion first.

And that in turn requires argueing them from a position not based on “I disagree, and my opinion is the correct one”, but on philosophical, logical and argumentative flaws in their believe system. Which is not easy to do. At all. It’s in fact very hard, made harder by the fact that our brains can see information, actively realize this information is correct and contradicts something we thought of earlier, and yet also discard said information and stick to the existing mental model instead. Meaning that even if you do everything correct, they might go “Yes, that’s true” and then nothing happens, out of no ill will.

  • Sure, but as long as modding is a volunteer position that won’t change. If for no other reason that like you say, it’s not a position that motivates you to investigate reports.

Couple that with how toxic and negative Lemmy is overall, and it doesn’t surprise me that the raw volume of reports will lead to a very high amount of “yeah, sure” bans with mininal investigation.

Plus the last part wasn’t meant as a “join in” thing, rather, if you desire an instance that does not abide by bad moderation, the fediverse puts the onus on you to create that instance. Everyone is free to do so, within some limitations such as - and that’s a very very valid thing - a need for adequate moderation tools.
