I want to create a Pixelfed account but I’m not sure which instance to choose. I’m in the US, so I was just going to pick the default and largest option, but I know spreading out the instances is one advantage to the federated network, so it then makes sense to choose a smaller one.

I had picked a smaller instance on Lemmy and it ended up being discontinued, which was kind of a bummer to restart the communities I had on there. So a larger instance looks attractive again.

Do any of you have a recommended instance that would maybe be on the smaller side, but also have a decent chance for continuing?

I’ve been using https://metapixl.com for a while, (well, not really using because I have nearly zero use for it, but anyway), I think it’s a really good one since it has the most generous resources of the ones I looked at over on the Pixelfed instance finder.

From what I’ve seen so far the whole place looks like a ghost town though, or maybe it’s just me not having experience with interacting on Instagram-like software so it seems like the activity is barely existent, nearly no likes nor comments anywhere I look on average, however there are quite a bit of posts!

I’ve been on Pxlmo and I love it there so far, except for some reason I’ve never been able to get video posts to work. That’s probably just user error though.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I’ve also been using it as an image host for posting pictures here! I kinda figured that, since Pixelfed is literally designed for picture sharing, it might be better at handling all those files? Hopefully?

That’s the whole reason I signed up for it. I’m new to Fediverse stuff, and not the most computer literate. I’ve never been on Instagram, and just used imgur to post pics on reddit. I like open source stuff on principle, and I figured pixelfed was probably a better place than imgur, and I wasn’t sure if there was a fediverse/open source version of imgur.

I now use it to hoarde stolen memes, mainly from u/Stamets on startrek.website. lol.

One of the first fediverse accounts I made was a pixelfed.social and it has served me perfectly for almost a year now.
